HealthyFood: the main member chooses the partners for the whole family, dependants cannot change them, and the main member can revoke dependants' share of the rewards

In the HealthyFood benefit for Vitality Active members with Vitality Money, the main member's choice of retail partners binds the spouse and dependants, who cannot change it. Qualifying spend is counted in a set order that starts with the main member. Vitality Active rewards are paid to the main member, and dependants receive their own share only for as long as the main member has not revoked consent for them to receive it.

Clause, verbatim

If the main member on a Vitality Active membership chooses primary partners, the spouse, adult dependants and child dependants 18 years or older on the same Vitality Active membership will have the same primary partners. The primary partner selected on the Vitality Active membership will also apply to the Vitality Money membership.

What this means

The HealthyFood benefit guide for Vitality Active members with a qualifying Discovery Bank product and Vitality Money describes one benefit shared by a family on one membership, and it assigns different rights to different family roles. The main member chooses the retail partners for everyone, can override a choice made by anyone else, and once the main member has chosen, no one else on the membership can change it. When more than one person buys HealthyFood items, the spend that earns rewards is counted in a fixed order that starts with the main member. And the portion of rewards that comes from the Vitality Active programme is paid to the main member — dependants receive their own share only for as long as the main member has not revoked consent for that to happen. Each of these rules is stated plainly in the guide; this entry sets out what each family role can and cannot control.

The clause

The representative clause above (p. 5, DSC-3376) makes the main member’s choice of primary partners binding on the spouse, adult dependants and child dependants 18 years or older. The guide then adds an override and a bar on changes:

“The main member on the Vitality Active membership can override the primary HealthyFood partners chosen by the spouse or dependants on their membership. • Once the main member on the Vitality Active membership has chosen the HealthyFood primary partners, the spouse, adult dependant or child dependant 18 years or older can’t change the primary partners.” — p. 5, DSC-3377

Where this appears

The clauses appear in the benefit guide “Get up to 75% back in Discovery Miles on thousands of HealthyFood items”, headed “Vitality Active and Vitality Money”, dated June 2026 and captured on 21 July 2026. On Discovery’s Vitality product-rules pages it is published under the VITALITY ACTIVE tab and, byte-identically, under the VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY tab (the second copy is recorded as DSC-4243 to DSC-4288; the clauses quoted here correspond to DSC-4253, DSC-4254, DSC-4255, DSC-4268, DSC-4269, DSC-4270 and DSC-4274 in that copy).

How the mechanic works

Obligations are individual. Every adult on the membership must activate the benefit themselves, and each person’s reward percentages depend on their own assessments and engagement:

“All adults on the Vitality Active membership with a qualifying Discovery Bank product and Vitality Money must activate the benefit on their own Vitality profiles to earn rewards. As a Vitality Active and Vitality Money member, your Vitality HealthyFood rewards are based on your engagement with the Vitality Active and the Vitality Money programmes, as well as on your qualifying monthly spend on your Discovery Bank credit card.” — pp. 6–23, DSC-3378

Partner choice is not individual. The main member’s selection of a primary online partner and a primary in-store partner applies to the whole membership, including the linked Vitality Money membership (the representative clause, DSC-3376). The main member can override a choice made by a spouse or dependant, and after the main member has chosen, the spouse and dependants “can’t change the primary partners” (DSC-3377).

Spend is counted in a set order. When the household’s purchases are measured against the monthly caps, the guide ranks the members:

“Transactions are listed in the following order: i) Member role: First the main member, followed by the spouse, adult dependants and then child dependants 18 years or older • Priority of dependants: Among adult dependants and child dependants 18 years or older, we prioritise the purchases made by the individual who joined the policy first. If the monthly cap has not been reached, we will calculate the purchases made by the next member on the policy.” — p. 14, DSC-3391

A member’s purchases are only counted if the members ahead of them in the order have not already reached the cap.

Rewards flow through the main member. The Vitality Active portion of the household’s rewards is paid to the main member, and a dependant’s receipt of their own share is conditional:

“Pay the total Vitality Active rewards for the month to the main member in Discovery Miles. When a member of the Vitality Active membership is a Vitality Money member, the member will receive their share of rewards from both the Vitality Active and Vitality Money programmes as Discovery Miles allocated into their own Discovery Miles Account, provided that the main member on the Vitality Active programme has not revoked consent for this to occur. • Should consent be revoked, the Vitality Active portion of rewards will be allocated to the main member on the Vitality Active membership. • Each member will receive their own rewards from their Vitality Money purchases.” — p. 16, DSC-3392

The consent that can be revoked belongs to the main member. The guide restates the condition when describing payment:

“As long as the main member of the Vitality Active membership has not revoked consent for the dependents on the Vitality Active membership to receive the Vitality Active portion of rewards, the rewards for your portion of the Vitality Active HealthyFood benefit, together with your Vitality Money boosted reward, will be paid to you as Discovery Miles at a rate of 10 Discovery Miles per R1 earned, rounded up to the nearest whole Discovery Mile, by the 15th of the following month.” — p. 18, DSC-3393

Taken together, the roles look like this. The main member chooses and can change the partners, can override the others’ choices, receives the Vitality Active rewards, and can revoke the consent under which dependants receive their share. The spouse, adult dependants and child dependants 18 or older must activate individually, must complete their own assessments, earn their own Vitality Money rewards on their own purchases, and cannot change the primary partners; their Vitality Active share reaches them only while the main member’s consent stands. The guide states each of these rules as a feature of how the benefit is administered; it does not state a reason for the asymmetry, and this entry does not speculate about one.
