Organised by combination: how the rules are published, and what that structure shows
Discovery does not publish one set of Vitality rules per programme. Its product-rules page (discovery.co.za/vitality/product-rules, captured 21–23 July 2026) is organised into five product-combination tabs: VITALITY HEALTH ONLY, VITALITY HEALTH AND VITALITY MONEY, VITALITY MONEY ONLY, VITALITY ACTIVE, and VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY. A member looking for their rules is not asked “which programme do you belong to?” but, in effect, “which combination of products do you hold?” — and the documents behind each tab differ.
This registry’s corpus mirrors that page exactly: every tab, folder and file as served, including the provider’s own naming, with each duplicate captured in every location it is published. The result is 273 PDF documents — 49 under VITALITY HEALTH ONLY, 80 under VITALITY HEALTH AND VITALITY MONEY, 28 under VITALITY MONEY ONLY, 45 under VITALITY ACTIVE and 66 under VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY, plus two bank legal documents from Discovery Bank’s own document server and three superseded legacy documents kept for the historical record (capture notes; processing log). Because parallel copies were kept and checksummed rather than deduplicated, the structure itself becomes observable. This essay documents four things the structure shows. All of them are facts about files, names, checksums and dates; none requires any claim about intention.
The same sections wear different names on different tabs
The folder that holds the main rules is called “Vitality Health Main Rules” on the VITALITY HEALTH ONLY tab, “Main Vitality rules” on the VITALITY HEALTH AND VITALITY MONEY tab, “Main Vitality Money rules” on the VITALITY MONEY ONLY tab, “Vitality Main Rules” on the VITALITY ACTIVE tab — and “Vitality Health Main Rules” again on the VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY tab, a tab whose anchor programme is not Vitality Health. On the VITALITY ACTIVE tab, the main-rules folder contains documents whose printed titles name a different programme: “Vitality Main Rules for Vitality Health members” and “Summary of Vitality Health Points” (dataset records DSC-3651 and DSC-3573, with the title-based programme assignment noted in each record).
The pattern continues below the top level. The gym section’s subfolders are “Fitness centres and gyms” on one tab and “Fitness Centres and Gyms” on two others; the travel section is “Travel rewards” on three tabs and “Travel Rewards” on a fourth; the healthy-living section is “HealthyLiving, HealthyDining and HealthyFood Studio” on the two Vitality Health tabs and “HealthyLiving and HealthyFood Studio” elsewhere. Filenames diverge the same way: the Ster-Kinekor guide is sk-benefit-guide.pdf on the two Vitality Health tabs and ster-kinekor-benefit-guide.pdf on the two Vitality Active tabs; the Discovery Miles brochure is discovery-miles-rewards-currency-brochure.pdf on two tabs and discovery-miles-brochure.pdf on a third, byte-identical by checksum (processing log). Even the shape of a tab varies: the VITALITY HEALTH ONLY tab’s gym section is a single flat folder of ten fitness-device guides, while the other gym-carrying tabs divide theirs into four subfolders; the VITALITY MONEY ONLY tab has no assessments or movies sections at all and files its fitness documents under a section the other tabs do not have, “Vitality Fitness”. None of this, by itself, changes a member’s rights. It does mean that the same rule set cannot be located by the same name, in the same place, from tab to tab.
Some documents exist only for some combinations
Checked against the full corpus inventory, not inferred from extracts:
Dynamic Discounts. The section “Dynamic Discounts with Vitality Money” exists on exactly the three tabs whose combination includes Vitality Money. It holds four documents — one per card tier (Gold, Platinum, Black, Purple), each “Effective 1 January 2026” — and the copies across the three tabs are byte-identical by md5 (processing log). The two tabs without Vitality Money carry no Dynamic Discounts section at all.
The Virgin Active campaign. The campaign guide offering up to 75% off Virgin Active gym fees — documented in the registry’s first entry — appears exactly once in the corpus, under VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY. The VITALITY ACTIVE tab’s own Fitness Centres and Gyms folder contains no Virgin Active document of any kind, and the VITALITY HEALTH AND VITALITY MONEY tab carries a different Virgin Active document (virgin-active-post-benefit-guide.pdf). A Vitality Active member without Vitality Money, reading their own tab, would not encounter the campaign guide there.
Travel. The VITALITY HEALTH ONLY tab lists four travel documents; each Money-inclusive tab lists eight, the extra four carrying filenames marked “card-and-bank” or “bank-only”. The VITALITY ACTIVE tab has no travel section.
Vitality Active Rewards 3.0. The document vitality-active-rewards-3.0-terms-and-conditions.pdf appears on the VITALITY MONEY ONLY, VITALITY ACTIVE and VITALITY ACTIVE AND VITALITY MONEY tabs, and on neither Vitality Health tab.
Each of these is a statement about which benefits attach to which product combinations, made not in any clause but in the shape of the shelf.
The same document can differ between tabs
Where the corpus holds parallel copies, checksums make differences visible. Most copies are byte-identical. The exception the registry has documented in full is the Ster-Kinekor movie benefit guide: the two Vitality Active tabs serve a version dated December 2022, while the two Vitality Health tabs serve a version dated 12 February 2026, under a different filename, with materially different terms — a qualifying-movies restriction, a refund condition, a children’s benefit and a guardianship warranty exist in one version and not the other. Which version a member reads is decided by which tab they read.
Even current documents disagree on values
Reading across tabs also surfaces disagreements that have nothing to do with tab placement: the registry has documented concurrently published documents stating different values for the same limits — a Miles+ spend threshold of R3,000 in the Discovery Miles terms and conditions against R3,150 in the Discovery Miles brochure published on the same tabs, and a yearly fitness-points limit of 30,000 in the Vitality Main Rules against 25,000 in the points summary published alongside them.
What the structure means for a member
Stated factually: a member’s rules depend on their product combination, and establishing one’s exact terms requires knowing which tab to read — and reading it, rather than a neighbouring tab that may carry the same benefit under a different filename, in a different version, or not at all. Two members of the same programme with different product combinations are served different document sets. The differences documented above were surfaced only by capturing every tab in full and comparing checksums, filenames and dates across them. The registry does not assert why the rules are published this way. It records that they are, as of 21–23 July 2026, with every document archived, dated and page-referenced — so that “what are my rules?” can at least be answered with “as published on your tab, on this date, these.”
